Getting a Scholarship

As a parent we should set aside a small amount of money each month to go toward our child's education.  But like all American, most of us live from pay check to pay check. So how can we afford to send them to college?

Before your child graduate from High School, do you have a plan on how to pay for his/her college tuitions?  If the answer to this question is , "No" then you need to find other resources to provide for your child's education. There are different ways to obtain a scholarship without any money. One of the easiest & cheapest way is to have them apply for a scholarship.

  • scholarship is a award for an individual student scholar, for the purpose of furthering their education. Scholarships are awarded based on a range of criteria which usually reflect the values and purposes of the donor or founder of the award.

Depending on the scholarship requirements, some will ask the student to
  • submit an essay
  • have a high school transcript
  • maintain a certain GPA grade point
  • show proof of US or legal resident
  • show leadership in extracurricular activities
  • show community involvement or public service
Another way to obtain free money is to apply for financial aid. Federal Financial aid can be obtain by applying thru the university or institution in which your child choose to go. The Federal Student Financial Aid, which is composed of different programs, grants, scholarships, work & loan programs including Federal Pell grants, as well as Federal Staff loans can be achieve by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) .

It is important to start the process early by asking the school counselor or Student services department for assistance as this process may require additional information to be fill out, such as household income, social security information, driver license and previous income tax information.  Be sure to meet the deadline for submission.   Courtesy of Cheap Guru
